If you sell online through WooCommerce and also take money face-to-face at markets, pop-ups, or a physical location, you have probably dealt with the awkward reality of running two separate systems. Your online orders live in WooCommerce. Your in-person sales go through a separate till, a card terminal, or a manual note in a spreadsheet. Stock levels drift, reconciliation takes time, and at some point something sells out online that you already shifted at a market three hours earlier.
That operational gap now has a cleaner answer for UK merchants.
WooCommerce’s iPhone POS update makes it possible to run a point-of-sale directly from an iPhone, with no additional hardware required. You browse your product catalogue, build a cart, and take payment, all from the phone already in your pocket. Sales sync to your WooCommerce store in real time, so your stock levels and order records stay accurate across both channels without any manual reconciliation.
The update gives UK merchants three payment options at the point of sale.
The first is Tap to Pay on iPhone. The phone itself acts as the card reader: a customer taps their contactless card or device, and the transaction goes through. No terminal, no dongle, no separate piece of equipment to carry, charge, or lose. This option alone removes the hardware cost that has historically made in-person card acceptance an additional line in the budget.
The second option is connecting a WisePad 3 card reader, for merchants who prefer a physical device or whose customers occasionally present cards that require a chip-and-PIN entry rather than a tap.
The third is cash, recorded directly in the app so that cash sales appear alongside card transactions in your WooCommerce order history.
For card payments to work through either of the first two methods, your store needs WooPayments or Stripe set up as the payment processor. If you are already using one of those on your WooCommerce store for online transactions, you are most of the way there. If not, that configuration step is where you need to start before the POS functionality becomes available to you. The iPhone itself must also be running iOS 26 or later, so if your device is on an older version, an update comes before anything else.
For anyone running a WooCommerce store alongside any kind of physical presence, the stock and order sync is the part of this that carries the most practical weight.
When a sale goes through on the iPhone POS, it creates an order in WooCommerce and adjusts stock immediately. If you sell the last unit of a product at a Saturday market, that product shows as out of stock in your online store before the next customer can place a web order for it, which makes overselling across channels much harder to fall into. There are currently over four million live stores running on WooCommerce globally, and competition for customers means a stock discrepancy carries a real reputational cost. A customer who orders something online and receives a cancellation email because you sold it at a fair two days earlier is unlikely to try again.
The sync also keeps your reporting clean. Revenue from in-person sales appears in the same WooCommerce dashboard as your online revenue, so you are not exporting from one system and importing into another at the end of the month to get a clear picture of the business.
One thing worth checking before you start using the iPhone POS at scale: your WooCommerce tax settings need to reflect how you sell in person. If your online store applies tax differently based on customer location, in-person sales through the POS will apply the tax configuration you have set at the store level. Check that your settings under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax are correct for your physical sales context before you start processing transactions. I am not a tax adviser, and the specifics of VAT treatment for your business are a question for your accountant, but the configuration side is something I can help you get right.
The update is available now for UK merchants, alongside Canada and the US. If you have been holding off on in-person selling because the hardware cost or setup complexity felt like too much overhead for occasional markets or events, the barrier is now lower than it has ever been: an iPhone you already own, a payment processor you may already use, and an app update.
Ready to start taking in-person payments through your WooCommerce store?
Update the WooCommerce app on your iPhone to get access to the POS. If you need WooPayments or Stripe configured on your store before you can process card transactions, or if you want to check that your tax and stock settings are correct before you start selling in person, get in touch with me at The WordPress Guy. Getting the payment processor set up incorrectly from the start creates problems that are harder to fix after you have live orders in the system, so it is worth doing it properly before your next market or event.
