WordPress Developer Scotland

Specialist WordPress engineering for Scotland and beyond.

Jason Boyd is a specialist WordPress engineer based in West Lothian, Scotland. Not a generalist agency. Not a freelancer who takes any project that comes in. A specialist — 20+ years working on the specific category of WordPress problems that break sites, cost businesses money, and defeat every developer who tried before me.

I work with Scottish businesses in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and across Scotland, as well as UK-wide clients. Every engagement begins with a forensic audit. Every proposal is fixed-price. Every fix is permanent.

The difference

Specialist versus generalist

Most WordPress problems that reach me have already been through a generalist developer or web agency. They have tried disabling plugins one by one. They have reinstalled WordPress. They have contacted hosting support, who blamed the plugins. Nothing has worked.

The reason these approaches fail is that complex WordPress problems require specific tools and knowledge that generalist developers do not have: reading PHP error logs and server logs directly, profiling database query execution, understanding the hook and filter architecture well enough to trace where in the request lifecycle something is going wrong, and accessing WordPress via WP-CLI and direct database connection when the admin panel is inaccessible.

I have those tools and that knowledge. My background includes an MSc in Cybersecurity, a 1st Class Honours in Computer Science from the University of St Andrews, and a former role as a W3C Invited Expert in web accessibility. I have delivered WordPress projects for NHS Scotland, Fujitsu, GE Capital, and Openreach. These are not credentials I list for marketing purposes — they are the context for why I can find what others cannot.

Services

What I do for Scottish and UK businesses

All engagements begin with a diagnostic audit. I do not quote for work I have not yet assessed.

Performance engineering

Forensic diagnosis of what is slowing your WordPress site: database query profiling, Core Web Vitals remediation, caching architecture, and server-level tuning. 60–85% LCP improvements are typical. Root cause only — no generic speed tips.

Security hardening

WordPress security beyond plugin installation: attack surface reduction, malware removal and forensic breach investigation, CSP headers, and incident response. Experience with NHS Scotland and financial sector compliance requirements.

Forensic troubleshooting

Intermittent errors, broken checkouts, and plugin conflicts that other developers cannot trace. I use error logs, Query Monitor, and staging environment isolation — not elimination guesswork — to find the root cause before proposing any fix.

Custom development

Plugins, child themes, REST API integrations, and WooCommerce customisation built to specification and to WordPress Coding Standards. Fixed-price after a written brief. No monolithic plugins, no maintenance liabilities.

Technical SEO

Crawlability, canonicalisation, structured data implementation, Core Web Vitals, and XML sitemap health. The technical substrate search engines need to rank your site — not keyword strategy, not content planning.

Care plans

Monthly maintenance from £49: staged updates tested before live deployment, off-site backups, and security monitoring. A structured maintenance relationship, not an afterthought.

Location

Serving Edinburgh, Glasgow, and all of Scotland

I am based in Whitburn, West Lothian — geographically central between Edinburgh and Glasgow. All work is carried out remotely, so location does not affect the engagement in any practical sense. I have active clients in both cities, across the Central Belt, and in other parts of Scotland including Aberdeen and Dundee.

Edinburgh clients tend to be in professional services, financial technology, public sector, and legal. Glasgow clients are more often in creative industries, retail, and hospitality. In both cases, the technical problems are the same: sites that need to be fast, secure, and reliable — and to stay that way without requiring constant manual management.

Scottish businesses working with me benefit from a developer who is in the same time zone, understands the Scottish business and regulatory context (including the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations and the specific compliance requirements of NHS Scotland contracts), and is available during UK business hours.

The process

Fixed-price. No surprises.

Full process detail

Every engagement begins with a written brief. You describe your problem, I ask any clarifying questions, and I perform a thorough diagnostic audit before committing to any price. You receive a written diagnosis and a fixed-price proposal — a single number covering the complete scope of work, with every deliverable itemised.

I do not work on a time-and-materials basis. I do not send invoices for hours spent going around in circles. If the diagnosis reveals the problem is more complex than the brief suggested, I tell you before the price changes. Nothing expands without your explicit agreement.

This model protects you from the open-ended billing that makes complex technical work financially unpredictable. You know what it will cost before I start. If I cannot solve the problem, you do not pay for the remediation.

FAQs

Common questions from Scottish clients

Do I need to be based in Scotland to work with you?

No. All my work is carried out remotely via email and shared access to your site. I have worked with clients across Scotland, England, and internationally. The remote model means geography is irrelevant to the quality of the work.

Do you work with Edinburgh and Glasgow businesses?

Yes. A significant portion of my Scottish clients are based in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Whether you are in Edinburgh's financial sector, a Glasgow creative agency, or anywhere else in Scotland, the engagement model is the same: written brief, forensic audit, fixed-price proposal, permanent fix.

Do you have experience with Scottish public sector organisations?

Yes. I have delivered WordPress projects for NHS Scotland and other public sector clients. Public sector work often involves heightened security requirements, accessibility obligations under the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018, and procurement processes I am familiar with.

What types of Scottish businesses do you typically work with?

My Scottish clients include professional services firms, WooCommerce retailers, membership organisations, public sector bodies, and businesses in regulated sectors such as healthcare and financial services. The common thread is a site that needs to work reliably, not a business of any particular type.

Why use a specialist WordPress developer rather than a Scottish web agency?

A generalist agency distributes your project across account managers, designers, and developers of varying seniority. I work directly on your site — no handoffs, no juniors, no miscommunication. Complex WordPress problems require a specialist who can read error logs and trace execution through the hook system, not a team that follows a checklist.

How quickly can you start?

I can typically begin a new engagement within 3–5 working days of receiving a brief. For genuine emergencies — a live site down or an active security incident — contact me directly and I will tell you honestly what I can do.
