The infrastructure powering online retail is being rebuilt at a pace most store owners have not registered. AWS reported its fastest growth in 18 quarters in its most recent financial results, with net sales reaching an annualised run rate up 37% year on year. Its AI business alone exceeded a $25 billion annual revenue run rate, growing at triple-digit percentages. Microsoft’s AI business surpassed $13 billion in annualised revenue in Q3 FY2026, growing 123% year on year. These are not abstract technology metrics: they describe the rate at which the platforms your competitors use to process payments, serve product recommendations, and run search are being rebuilt around AI capabilities.
For WooCommerce store owners, the question is specific: does your current hosting and infrastructure setup give you access to any of that, or are you running a 2019 architecture while the competitive environment around you changes shape?
19.8% of all WordPress sites run WooCommerce, with 97.7% of those stores built on WordPress. Plugin-level AI features are only as good as the hosting environment that runs them. Managed cloud hosting costs more than shared hosting, but the monthly hosting bill only makes sense measured against what surrounds it: the conversion rate difference between a store that loads in under two seconds and one that loads in four, the abandoned cart rate on a slow checkout, and the revenue that AI-driven product recommendations generate when the server can actually run them. None of those figures are theoretical. They show up in your WooCommerce analytics under Reports > Revenue and in your checkout funnel abandonment data.
One angle that rarely gets considered: the AI infrastructure investment being made at AWS and Microsoft is creating a talent and tooling concentration around cloud-native architecture. The developers building the next generation of WooCommerce extensions, payment integrations, and personalisation tools are building for environments with reliable compute, low latency, and modern PHP runtime support. Stores on legacy shared hosting will find that newer, more capable plugins simply do not perform as documented, because the documented performance assumes infrastructure that shared hosting does not provide, and that gap will widen rather than close.
